So, many of us are juggling work/school, children, relationship, healthy, household chores and SO much more. My tips on self care are always given with great intentions HOWEVER, this just isn't always realistic.
The best way to describe self care, for myself at least, is the constant repetition of many tiny habits that sooth you and make sure you're feeling balanced both emotionally, physically, and mentally. After all, the mind and the body function as one. Its really hard to have a clear head or experience happiness and peace when you are not feeling good, physically.
Now, I'm the first to admit that I am not the best when it comes to mastering these habits BUT here are some of the self-care habits I'm working on right now:
1. GO OUTSIDE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
Or at least open a window or two. Getting some sunshine and fresh air first thing in the morning can definitely help balance your internal clock and make it easier to sleep at night. & that's a fact, I did the research :)
Now for myself and everyone else in the Midwest, that habit may get cut short due to the weather so I'm not sure how long I can keep this habit up (LOL) but I've been doing a great job all summer and fall- it helps that we have a balcony in our room. A quick step outside when you wake up can really make your day.
2. DRINK MORE WATER
Self explanatory...right? It seems so simple and obvious but when you have a busy lifestyle like mine, its very easy to forget to drink water. I'll have busy days where I forget to drink water (sometimes fluids in general) and that results in a major headache and muscle spasms. It does not feel so great! Water is the best cure for that!
3. FOCUS ON MICRO SELF CARE ACTIVITIES
Get rid of the idea that self care is going out and having a full blown spa day- that's not realistic folks! Now if you have time for a full self care day then DO IT, by all means. But if you don't, that's ok too! Try some of these daily, micro activities to release some stress:
-Meditate and take deep breaths when you make up for about 5-10 minutes.
-Stretch and if you're extra fancy incorporate some yoga in the morning or before you go to bed.
-Put on your favorite playlist (Mine is Soul- filled with Anita, Jill, and Auntie Badu and Uncle Kem).
There's so many little things you can do that will add up and make great difference in your day.
4. DAILY SELF REFLECTION LIST
Purchase yourself a journal if you haven't already and write, write, write! Write about your day. Jot down your goals...and follow through! Here are some prompts that can help you with your daily reflections:
-How would I describe this day in 5 words?
-What are some things that made me smile today?
-What am I grateful for in this moment (today)?
-What do I hope to achieve tomorrow?
5. LOG OFF
While there are so many huge benefits when it comes to social media- especially during a time like this (#pandemiclife) where social media is what helps us feel well connected with friends and family. We all need a break from it at times. Not to mention what the constant scrolling, screen brightness and irregular posture does to you body when you have your phone in your hand.
For me, this habit is definitely hard to control. I work full time (remotely), I run a online boutique, and this blog. My money is social media but I try to give myself at least a daily, 2-hr break from my phone....kind of like a lunch break. To rest my eyes, breathe and appreciate my surroundings.
Listen, self care does not need to be another task on your to-do list that is just going to add pressure to your already OH so busy lifestyle. There are so many fun and simple ways to engage with yourself even when you're low on time.
